Window guards
The metal guards owners must install in apartments where a child ten or younger lives; missing or broken ones are a Class C violation.
Local Law 57 of 1976 made window guards mandatory in multiple dwellings where young children live, after child window falls became a public health crisis. Owners must install and maintain them; tenants cannot refuse them where a child ten or younger resides. A missing or broken guard where one is required is immediately hazardous, and § 27-2043.1 of the Housing Maintenance Code carries the requirement.
