Open records are violations from HPD, DOB, ECB/OATH and FDNY, plus the complaint and hearing entries the city leaves open without a hazard class. Grouped by the owner name on the HPD property registration.

Methodology

  1. Owners are grouped from live HPD property registrations by the registered owner name. LLCs with different registered names are counted separately; we do not yet merge affiliated entities. Only registered organizations are ranked, not the individual officers HPD lists on the same registration.
  2. Each owner’s totals are the sum of the buildings listed on that owner’s page, counted once per building no matter how many registration years name it. Click any row to check the arithmetic.
  3. Owners are ranked by total open records. Closed and certified-corrected records are excluded. So are the borough-level placeholder BINs the city files use to mean “building not identified”.
  4. Data refreshes hourly from NYC Open Data; this page recomputes on the same cadence. Registrations lag reality: an owner may have sold a building recently.
  5. Every count is an open public record, not a finding of guilt. Many violations are contested or awaiting a hearing.
