Stop work order
A DOB order halting construction at a site immediately, issued when work is unsafe, unpermitted, or outside the approved scope.
A stop work order freezes a job site. Full orders halt everything; partial orders halt the offending work. Working through one is among the most seriously penalized construction offenses, with escalating civil penalties per violation.
Stop work orders arrive through DOB's enforcement stream, and the summonses they generate are decided at OATH. Lifting one requires correcting the condition, paying what is owed, and getting DOB to rescind.
